Individual Therapy in Los Angeles

Individual Therapy

As we work together to accomplish their treatment goals, my clients take intentional steps towards positive change. My favorite part of therapy is watching my clients find peace with their past, discover fulfillment by learning to thrive in their present, and feel confident that their future self will be aligned with the strengths and values most important to them.

If you are looking for individual therapy in Los Angeles, or anywhere in California, I would love the opportunity to work with you. My name is Dr. Shannon Thomas, and I am a licensed psychologist specializing in evidence-based therapy for anxiety, ADHD, relationship issues, and LGBTQ+ individuals and couples.

Your First Step

Getting Started

Understandably, starting therapy for the first time, or starting with a new therapist, can be a daunting process. I have been there, but I promise that making people feel comfortable and cared for while opening up about difficult and deeply personal topics is my specialty.

I offer a complimentary first 15-minute session before we get started. This is an opportunity for us to discuss what you are hoping to get out of therapy, for me to ensure that your needs are a good fit with my specialties and areas of expertise, and for you to ask any questions you may have about the therapeutic process.

In our first full sessions together we will identify your symptoms, treatment goals, values, and strengths, and begin building the personalized coping skills that make up the bulk of our work. Most clients meet weekly at the start, moving to every-other-week and then monthly check-ins as progress is made. As strange as it sounds, my goal is to put myself out of a job.

Reach out today to take the next step towards alleviating your symptoms and leading a more fulfilling life full of moments that make you realize, “This is what me thriving looks like.”

A Bespoke Process

There Is No One Size Fits All In Therapy

I pull from a wide variety of evidence-based modalities to create a unique, personalized therapy for each patient based on their individual needs. You are a unique person with your own experiences and needs, so your therapy should be an adaptable and empowering approach that we collaborate on together.

Therapy with me will never be a cookie-cutter experience. It will be individualized to suit your goals, symptoms, culture, and relational style, with regular check-ins about what is working and what we should adjust. The heart of our work is the therapeutic relationship, and everything else is built on top of it.

Evidence-Based

The Approaches I Draw On

Rather than applying a single method to everybody, I integrate several evidence-based modalities and match them to the person in front of me. Some clients respond quickly to structured, skills-based work. Others need to understand where a pattern began before it will shift. Many need both, at different points.

My training spans years of therapy work in private practice, a community mental health center, a private hospital, and a university counseling center, alongside neuropsychological assessment at the V.A. and ADHD assessment in a hospital setting. That breadth is what makes a genuinely tailored approach possible.

Modalities I Integrate

  • CBT for identifying and reframing distorted thinking
  • DBT for riding out intense emotion without acting on it
  • ACT for making room for hard feelings while still moving forward
  • Psychodynamic for understanding where a pattern began
  • Attachment-based for how early bonds shape adult connection
  • Strength-based and solution-focused for building on what already works

Credentials That Matter

Why Work with Dr. Shannon Thomas?

I am a licensed psychologist (PSY35186) in California, a Certified ADHD Psychologist (ADHD-CCSP), and a Certified Sleep Therapist. Issues with motivation, attention, and sleep commonly go hand-in-hand with a primary diagnosis, which is why I pursued those certifications rather than referring that part of the work out. I like to be a “one stop shop” for my client’s therapeutic needs.

Alongside my practice I teach graduate psychology courses and training workshops, and I serve as President of the San Gabriel Valley Psychological Association. Staying close to the teaching side of this field is how I keep my clinical work current and I love collaborating with my local community of mental health professionals.

All sessions are conducted via telehealth on a HIPAA-compliant platform, so you can attend from anywhere in California, including Los Angeles, Pasadena, and the San Gabriel Valley. I typically begin seeing new clients within one week of our consultation.

My fee is $290 per individual session and $345 for couples therapy. I provide superbills for out-of-network insurance reimbursement.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you specialize in?

Four areas: anxiety, ADHD, relationship issues, and LGBTQ+ affirming therapy. Each has its own page with detail on my approach, what to expect, and how to begin. I also offer psychological assessment and couples therapy.

When can we begin?

Usually within one week of our consultation. I know how hard it can be to take the first step and reach out for therapy, so I pride myself on beginning with new clients as soon as possible. This helps capitalize on the momentum and motivation you are experiencing, and lets us start alleviating your symptoms at the earliest possible date.

What days and times are sessions available?

Mondays through Wednesdays, 9am to 5pm, are devoted to virtual therapy, with Thursdays and Fridays reserved for psychological testing. When I do not have an assessment booked, I offer therapy on those days as well. A premium rate applies to after-hours and weekend appointments. Some clients prefer a consistent weekly slot, others book the week ahead at the end of each session. Either works.

Will all sessions be virtual, or do you offer in person?

All therapy sessions are virtual, conducted on SimplePractice’s HIPAA-compliant video platform. This means therapy fits in amongst busy schedules without allotting time for commutes and parking. Assessment appointments, however, can be conducted in person. If you would prefer exclusively in-person therapy, I am happy to refer you.

How often will we meet?

Once weekly, at least to begin with. Meeting less often than that tends to turn therapy into a great deal of catch up rather than progress, and it is harder to track changes in your symptoms. As progress is made over time, you will be able to transition to every-other-week sessions, then monthly, and then only occasional check-ins.

Do I have to live in California?

Yes. Because I am licensed in California, you need to be located here to receive therapy from me. If you travel or are out of state for short periods, we may well be able to continue teletherapy, though that depends on the laws of the place you are visiting. Let me know your travel plans and I will check the regulations for you.

What is your fee?

$290 per individual session and $345 for couples therapy. These rates reflect the years of generalist education and specialist training behind the work, and the continued training I keep up so that I can draw on a wide range of modalities rather than applying one method to everybody.

Do you accept insurance?

Not directly, but I provide superbills for you to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. Many PPO plans cover all or a significant portion of out-of-network therapy after your deductible. It is worth calling your insurer before our consultation to ask about your out-of-network benefits.

Why don’t you take insurance?

Because insurance companies decide what your therapy looks like. When a therapist is on an insurance panel, the insurer dictates how long your appointments are, how often you can be seen, how long we can work together, and when they simply cease paying, sometimes after ten or fifteen sessions. I wholeheartedly disagree with a third party determining that.

Pursuing an in-network provider also often means months of waiting to be matched with a therapist who has openings, and who may or may not have expertise in what you are dealing with. When I am accepting new clients, I offer sessions the following week.

There is a confidentiality cost too. If we bill directly through your insurance, the company can request your private therapy notes, which means I can no longer guarantee your privacy. Providing superbills that your insurance reimburses you for removes both problems. If your plan does not cover out-of-network care, I can point you toward third-party services that handle out-of-network billing on your behalf.

A note on the research of Teletherapy: Every therapy session is conducted virtually, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a compromise. Extensive empirical research conducted over the last few years has repeatedly demonstrated that telehealth is equally as successful as in-person therapy, sometimes more effective (Bellanti et al., 2022; Krzyzaniak et al., 2021). It has also shown that teletherapy holds a higher retention rate, and that therapeutic gains are maintained over time, whether you are seeking therapy for anxiety, depression, ADHD, relationship issues, or other such disorders (American Psychological Association, 2020; Abrams, 2020).
